What is IATF 16949:2016?

IATF 16949:2016 is the Automotive Quality Management System standard — a combined effort by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It integrates IATF requirements with ISO 9001:2015 to create a single, globally recognised automotive QMS framework.

IATF 16949 is aligned with the quality requirements of Europe and US automotive OEMs, giving it international recognition across all major automotive supply chains.

Having worked directly inside GM and Toyota quality systems for over a decade, we don't just know the standard — we know what OEM auditors specifically look for on audit day.

Challenges IATF 16949
Directly Addresses

Automotive supply chains face unique quality pressures. IATF 16949 provides the framework to manage them systematically.

PPAP Rejections
Production Part Approval Process submissions failing OEM SQE review — costing months of delays and threatening supplier status.
Defect & Scrap in Production
Assembly defects, dimensional variation, and process instability causing scrap rates and warranty claims that erode margins.
Supply Chain Quality Failures
Incoming sub-component quality issues disrupting production lines — no supplier evaluation or incoming inspection system in place.
OEM Customer Audit Failures
Failed second-party audits from OEM SQEs identifying systemic weaknesses — threatening supplier approval status and contract continuation.
Lack of Core Tools
APQP, PPAP, FMEA, Control Plans, SPC, and MSA missing or improperly implemented — leaving production processes uncontrolled.
Regulatory Non-Compliance
Customer-specific requirements (CSRs) from GM, Toyota, or Ford not identified or implemented — leading to major audit nonconformances.

Why Get Certified to
IATF 16949:2016?

IATF 16949 is the entry ticket to automotive supply chains worldwide. Beyond compliance, it builds the operational discipline that lets manufacturers grow with major OEMs.

Mandatory OEM access — without IATF 16949, you cannot qualify as a Tier-1 or Tier-2 supplier to any major automotive OEM globally
Reduce defects at source — APQP and FMEA identify failure modes before production begins, not after customer rejection
Control production variation — SPC and MSA give real-time visibility into process stability and measurement system reliability
Pass PPAP every time — structured PPAP submissions accepted first time by OEM SQE teams with zero queries
Continual supply chain improvement — structured supplier development and incoming quality management across your supply chain
Reduce warranty costs — risk-based thinking through PFMEA and control plans prevents field failures before they reach end customers
Build OEM confidence — second-party audit results improve dramatically, protecting your preferred supplier status

AIAG Core Tools
